The problem with waste

Scots throw away enough waste to fill Murrayfield Stadium every day. Although recycling levels are rising, so too is the total amount of waste we all produce - increasing by 1% each year.

Waste sent to landfill creates many problems including:

• The release of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, both major contributors to climate change
• Loss of valuable resources that could be re-used
• Pollution to local water sources
• Decreased quality of life for nearby communities.

What can be done to reduce waste?

• REFUSE - Before buying or using something, think about whether you really need it at all

• REDUCE - When buying something you do actually need, try and choose long lasting items with minimal packaging

• RE-USE - Buy items that can be used again easily, and avoid those designed for single use before disposal

• RECYCLE - Buy products that are made from recycled materials that can easily be recycled again.
